Sprawl Spreads Two Acres Per Minute

Development consumes two acres of prime farmland each minute in the U.S.

A recent study by the American Farmland Trust, using census data and Agriculture Department information about crops and soil, found that more than half of the lost farmland in the United State is being carved into 10-acre lots. "We are consuming more land per person than at any time, in the most wasteful way," said Ralph Grossi, president of the trust, a nonprofit organization.
