"Homes are clustered at the 677-acre Prairie Crossing development in Grayslake instead of the usual suburban pattern of block after block of homes... This experiment in conservation is also an experiment in transportation... Called a transit-oriented development (TOD), it means the residents of Prairie Crossing can rely on rail rather than always using a car... Proponents of TOD maintain that new residences built near mass transit will reduce dependence on the automobile and slow sprawl."
