President and CEO of Independence Blue Cross to Share His Health Care Knowledge with Economic Developers

The International Economic Development Council is very pleased to announce our newest Annual Conference keynote speaker, Daniel J. Hilferty, President and CEO of Independence Blue Cross (IBC). Hilferty will be keynoting our Annual Conference’s Tuesday Luncheon, October 8, at 12:15 p.m.

IBC is a leading health insurer in southeastern Pennsylvania serving more than 7 million people nationwide. As an advocate for health care accessibility and quality, with more than 25 years of experience in the field, Hilferty brings a rich and dynamic perspective to health care reform and government affairs. He became President and CEO of IBC in December, 2010 and has been committed to helping the region and its 2.1 million residents.

Along with his involvement in health care reform, Hilferty is involved with several other issues. In addition to affordable health care, IBC has initiated a program to fight childhood obesity. Hilferty uses his expertise for more than commanding one of the largest health insurers in Pennsylvania. He also serves as a board member for many different organizations, both locally and nationally, including the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, Drexel Neumann Academy, the Franklin Institute, and Saint Joseph's University.

Along with his dedication to the Philadelphia region, Hilferty also has responsibilities nationally; he serves on the board of directors for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, a national federation of 38 independent and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. Collectively, these companies provide health care coverage for nearly one in three Americans. He is also an active member of the Health Policy and Legislative Committee. Hilferty serves on the board of directors for America's Health Insurance Plans, a national association representing nearly 1,300 member companies providing health insurance coverage to more than 200 million Americans.
