LEARNING FROM MADRID
Madrid is the capital city of Spain and the Madrid region. With nearly 3,2 million inhabitants it is the second most populous city in the EU. It is an open and multicultural metropolis that welcomes 17% of its population from more that 180 different nationalities.

GREEN CITY
Since the early millennium Madrid has developed new strategies to make the city greener, healthier and safer. One of the most ambitious planning projects has been the tunneling of the underground of the M-30, one of the main roads surrounding the city. Within the past year this has resulted in an improved traffic flow, fewer accidents and a reduction in CO² emissions by 35,000 tonnes.

Madrid also reconnected the city with the waters of the river Manzanares. The project has reclaimed more than 3,2 million square meters of green space, providing the local inhabitants with improved access to recreational areas. The study tour will visit the area of Madrid Rio by bicycle, accompanied by architect Werner Durrer, MADRIDES.
