OMA and Populous are among the members of an international team of architects working for developers Lend Lease on a 2.15 million-square-foot revamp of Sydney's Darling Harbour as a convention, exhibition, and entertainment district.
Lissette Valdez provides the details on Sydney's $1 billion “Darling Harbour Live.” The massive redevelopment will include: "a red carpet entertainment venue, an exhibition center, a new residential neighborhood called The Haymarket —designed by Denton Corker & Marshall —and a 900 room hotel for which OMA led the conceptual design." The creation of several public, open, and event spaces are also part of the plan.
Australian MP Barry O’Farrell said in a statement [PDF] that, “The redevelopment goes far beyond improving facilities—it’s also about re-shaping the city. Darling Harbor already attracts 25 million people a year and this development will create a more vibrant place on Sydney Harbor.”
The project joins the $6.2 billion live/play/work development known as Barangaroo - planned for a 54-acre site in East Darling Harbor - in redefining Sydney for the 21st century.
