After the Crisis: New Directions for Housing Policy and Finance in the U.S. and U.K.
September 13th – 14th, 2012
The New School
Theresa Lang Community and Student Center
Arnhold Hall, 55 West 13th Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY

More than three years have passed since the housing bubble burst in the United States, setting off the most severe financial crisis since the Great Depression, which in turn triggered the worst recession since the 1930s. A similar housing-market and financial crisis occurred in the U.K. The housing markets in both countries remain in the doldrums. Both countries have yet to decide how to address their many housing problems. What is the future of housing finance and what are the prospects for affordable housing in a time of fiscal austerity? What role will the government ultimately play in the housing finance system?

The New School is hosting a two-day conference to reflect on the state of housing policy and housing finance in the US and UK. Leading housing experts from both nations will examine the current state of housing finance, housing policy, and discuss future prospects, with a focus on housing finance and affordability. The first day of the conference will feature two discussion panels, on the Future of Housing Finance, and on Post-Crisis Prospects for Affordable Rental Housing in a Time of Fiscal Austerity. The second day will feature two sets of paper presentations. The conference is sponsored by the Housing Studies Charitable Trust and by the Rockefeller Foundation.

The conference is free, but registration is required.
