Flooding recently swept Duluth, Minnesota, and summer storms could put communities across the country at risk. To help them prepare, the American Planning Association is presenting "Planning Flood-Resilient Communities," June 27 in Chicago. The workshop will repeat October 10 in Kansas City.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
This one-day Planners Training Service workshop offers practical advice on managing stormwater, mitigating flood hazards, and making communities more resilient. Participants will learn about:
• Green flood-control infrastructure
• Hazard-mapping technologies
• Funding sources for flood planning
• Winning political support for effective flood management
Members of the American Institute of Certified Planners can earn 7 certification maintenance credits at the workshop.
WORKSHOP PRESENTERS
The workshop features experts with hands-on experience in flood management. They include:
• Julia Burrows, president of Greenwise Joint Venture and the former deputy city manager who helped Roseville, California, become the only Class 1 city in FEMA's Community Rating System
• James Schwab, AICP, manager of APA's Hazards Planning Research Center and a nationally recognized writer on disaster resilience
• Timothy J. Trautman, flood-mitigation program manager for Mecklenburg County, North Carolina
• Shana Udvardy, a consultant who works with government agencies and elected officials to promote 21st-century flood control
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Registration closes June 26. Fees are $295 for APA and AICP members, $360 for nonmembers, and $75 for students. When one person from an organization registers, colleagues can sign up for $100 each.
