This highly interactive course lets participants work in small teams to help understand the complexity of strategic planning and its challenges. Economic developers must build consensus among board members, stakeholders and the community as a whole, creating a unified vision for the future. Learn techniques to build consensus among stakeholders who represent different values and interests. Also, participants will learn the quantitative techniques used to better understand their community including: location quotients, shift share, input-output and cluster analyses. Explore project assessment methods for setting priorities and measuring your plan's impact.

After working in the financial services industry in New York City, Rob entered the economic development field in 1993 as Director of Community Development for Saranac Lake, NY. In that role, he facilitated the community's first downtown revitalization strategy that led to securing $3 million for downtown commercial, residential, infrastructure and visitor attraction projects in less than four years and crafted a successful tax incentive program to promote commercial district private development. Rob subsequently served as Managing Director for River Street Planning & Development located in Troy, NY where he managed staff and firm finances, as well as provided consulting services to economic development organizations and municipal clients. Rob started Camoin Associates in 1999 specifically to provide revitalization and economic development services to Economic Development Organizations (EDO's), government, downtown organizations, real estate developers and businesses.

Jim Damicis

Jim Damicis has more than 20 years of experience in public policy research and analysis. Prior to merging with Camoin Associates, Jim built PolicyOne Research into a leading research and analysis firm in Maine serving private and public clients throughout the Northeast. Jim also worked for the Maine Science and Technology Foundation (MSTF) serving two years as the Director of Research and six months as the Director of Policy. While at MSTF, Jim was responsible for building and overseeing the Foundation's public policy research capacity with the intent of building and fostering the state's technology-based economic development. Prior to working for MSTF, Jim worked as an Associate with the public policy consulting firm Planning Decisions in South Portland, ME, for five years. While at Planning Decisions, Jim served state and local government clients in the areas of economic and community development, service delivery analysis, fiscal analysis, and demographic forecasting.

Janna King, president of Economic Development Services, Inc. in Minneapolis works with communities, non-profits, and utilities on community and economic development related issues including strategic planning; development area planning; marketing; workforce development; business retention; and commercial/industrial corridor revitalization issues. She has worked with clients in 10 states. Janna has prepared more than 35 economic development strategic plans for cities, counties, economic development non-profits, and chambers of commerce. She has served as an instructor at Hamline University, University of St. Thomas, the University of Minnesota, Oklahoma University (Economic Development Institute) and IEDC addressing economic development strategic planning and other development topics.
