Levin College of Urban Affairs Announces New Hires

Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University


They are:

Benjamin Clark, PhD
Dr. Clark will teach in the public administration and environmental policy programs at the Levin College. He received his PhD in Public Administration from the University of Georgia in 2009. His master's degree is from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and his BA in Political Science is from Indiana University. His areas of specialization in his PhD were public finance & budgeting, public management and quantitative research methods. His dissertation explored collaboration in academic scientific research, including how government funding streams influence collaboration. Dr. Clark has published and conducted research in policy science in the areas of national AIDS programs, water rights, and is currently focused on the influence of government funding across a variety of public policy issues. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal in 2000-2001. For the last three years Dr. Clark has served as Budget Analyst for the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government in Athens, Georgia.

Stephanie Ryberg, PhD
Dr. Ryberg will teach in the urban planning and urban studies programs at the Levin College. She received her PhD in City and Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania in May 2010. Her master's degree is from the University of Maryland in Historic Preservation, and her BA is in urban planning from the University of Cincinnati. Her fields of study for the PhD included planning history, community development, and urban geography. Dr. Ryberg's dissertation analyzed the use of historic preservation strategies for neighborhood stabilization and community development in four cities. She has several forthcoming publications, including a chapter on Historic Preservation in the 20th Century American City, and has published an article on contested histories in the Journal of Urban History. Dr. Ryberg has significant professional consulting experience in planning, including work for the National Park Service as a landscape historian.

Haifeng Qian, PhD
Dr. Qian will teach in the public administration and economic development programs at the Levin College. He received his PhD in the summer of 2010 from George Mason University. His master's degree is in Management Science and Engineering from the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and he received his BE in Engineering Physics from Tsinghua University as well. Dr. Qian's dissertation focused on regional entrepreneurship, examining human capital, knowledge and new firm formation. He has conducted research for the US Department of Agriculture and the World Bank (in energy policy). Dr. Qian has a publication on Chinese regional economic performance accepted in the Annals of Regional Science and has several book chapters in press and forthcoming on US R & D Policy, entrepreneurship and innovation.
