This course is held in partnership with the Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA).
IEDC's Neighborhood Development Strategies course focuses on how neighborhood groups and economic development organizations can use economic development strategies to combat the challenges facing distressed neighborhoods. The course outlines the unique issues facing these neighborhoods and suggests problem-solving approaches to address local needs. It defines the major neighborhood actors, their objectives and strategies for development and establishes a process for creating a strategic development plan to meet the established goals.
This course is designed to provide the tools and strategies needed to conquer neighborhood problems and provides examples of communities that have implemented noteworthy programs.
At the completion of the course, you will:
• Become familiar with the major actors in neighborhood economic development
• Understand the pressing issues in distressed neighborhoods
• Be aware of tools to combat inner city unemployment
• Be able to create a strategic plan for a neighborhood group
• Understand land use issues
• Have the tools to set up a business development program
