Learn creative economy planning, New Jersey planning law, and analysis for sustainability with BOCEP

Rutgers University Professional Development Institute

Rutgers University's Bloustein Online Continuing Education Program (BOCEP) helps you build skills and knowledge to enhance your practice and build your career. Our next set of Deep Learning courses, starting April 7, cover site planning for cultural uses, economic development through the arts, New Jersey planning law, and long-range planning.

BOCEP offers high-quality, convenient and cost-effective professional development. More than training, our 5.5-week courses help you learn topics in-depth to help you improve your practice. There are no scheduled meetings and you can participate at your convenience through the Internet. You also get to share ideas and insights with professionals from around the United States and the world. (In one recent class, there were participants from Abu Dhabi, South Africa and Somalia.)
You can earn 14 AICP Certification Maintenance credits and 20 hours toward a Bloustein Professional Certificate.

The next upcoming courses are:

*New Jersey Planning Law (April 7 to May 17): This course is designed to help planners prepare for the New Jersey Professional Planner license exam. But it does more: Learners get a deeper understanding of land use laws in New Jersey. Topics explored include municipal law, redevelopment law, affordable housing, and state environmental laws.

*Cultural Economic Development Studio (April 14 to May 22): This studio course provides hands-on training in the creative economy. Participants will work on a feasibility study to explore what it would take to make downtown Somerville, NJ an arts destination. Participants will learn to conduct market assessments for cultural planning and get a deeper understanding of why some arts districts succeed while others stuggle.

*Long Range Planning (April 21 to May 29): This course helps you build a tool set for sustainable planning and development. Learners will explore such skills as visioning, buildout analysis, cumulative impact assessment, visualization, benchmarking, and scenario analysis.

*Programming Cultural Uses (April 21 to May 29): Think of this course as site planning for the creative economy. How much land do you need for a theater? What land use issues arise with street fairs? Learners will explore these questions and more.
