Learn Environmental Planning Law and Brownfields Redevelopment

Learn Environmental Planning Law and Brownfields Redevelopment

Rutgers University - Professional Development Institute

From June 4 to July 12, the Bloustein Online Continuing Education Program is offering two classes that should interest community and environmental planners.

Brownfields Redevelopment
Many of the nation's poorest urban neighborhoods are left behind in efforts to revitalize cities. These are also the places that suffer disproportionately from environmental hazards and abandoned industrial sites. This course will examine this problem and discuss the programs, policies and strategies that can result in successful redevelopment of brownfields and rejuvenation of surrounding neighborhoods.
This course is for anyone interested in revitalizing and protecting urban communities. Experience in urban planning is helpful, but not necessary, to complete this course.

The instructor is Karen Lowrie, Project Director, National Center for Neighborhoods and Brownfields Redevelopment, Rutgers University. Dr. Lowrie is a planner who provides planning and technical assistance to community organizations and conducts research on brownfields.

Environmental Planning Law:
The purpose of this course is to introduce planning practitioners to federal, state, local, and regional environmental laws. Students will receive a short primer on those environmental laws with which planners most often encounter. The majority of the course, however, will focus on new developments within the purview of these laws. Upon completing this class, students will have basic familiarity with these laws and with the research methods they may employ to stay abreast with future modifications in these laws.
The instructor is Dawn Jourdan, Assistant Professor, University of Florida. She is a licensed attorney and planner with experience providing consultation to environmental organizations.

Each course costs $270, but there are a few discounted seats available. Use discount code: B05S08 to get a $70 discount.

The Bloustein Online Continuing Education Program (BOCEP) offers high quality, affordable, interactive and convenient professional development. Our students are mid- and senior-level professionals from around the United States. The courses are taught at a graduate level. Most course graduates surveyed said their courses met or exceeded their expectations, and that they would recommend BOCEP to their colleagues.
