Winter Issue Of The Next American City Magazine Now Available
Next American City
Winter issue of THE NEXT AMERICAN CITY magazine is NOW AVAILABLE!
In this issue: Immigration what it means for cities large and small and more.
In our winter issue, TNAC explores the ways in which immigrants are changing American cities. Joel Mills, a national day labor expert, writes about the strategies cities use to deal with the "day labor phenomenon" - mostly immigrants who gather to look for work in parking lots and on busy street corners. Robert Gottlieb tells the story of an explosive standoff over an urban garden, LA's South Central Farm, where Latinos had to be forcibly removed from a lush, and valuable, fourteen-acre plot.
We tackle other topics, too. In "Wrong Complexion for Protection," environmental justice professor Robert Bullard asks whether the "mother of all toxic cleanups," currently underway in New Orleans, will be fair to that city's poorest residents. john powell, an internationally-recognized civil rights scholar, argues that decades of racist development patterns and neglect have left cities like Detroit and Cleveland in worse shape than post-Katrina New Orleans.
