Cultural Competency For Urban Planning & Development, January 23, 2007 9am-1pm At Rutgers

The Leading Institute, Rutgers University

Are you concerned about how increasing diversity in our organizations and communities will affect your professional practice? Managing this diversity takes a distinct set of skills than you may have been taught in planning school. You can learn some of these skills in "Cultural Competency for Planning and Development" The workshop is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

As our communities and organizations become more diverse, we are challenged to find new ways to inform, influence and persuade. You will learn techniques and skills to help you plan, manage and lead more effectively. This workshop provides a balanced view of diversity. Explore:
• The mistakes that (even well-meaning) planners and leaders make that hurt diversity efforts.
• How to identify and address "tribalism."
• The challenges and benefits of diversity
• Exercises that help to manage conflict and reduce negative tension.

All participants receive lunch and the "Becoming Culturally Competent" chapter from Leading from the Middle: A Guide for Urban Planners and Community Development Professionals. Proceeds go to support scholarships for The Leading Institute programs.

Trainer: Leonardo Vazquez, AICP/PP, Instructor, Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers University.
