New Housing Design Competition

New Housing Design Competition

Small Lots, Smart Designs

The Challenge:

Enter "Small Lots, Smart Designs." The competition takes advantage of the recently adopted Los Angeles Small Lot Ordinance, which encourages fresh, innovative, and cost-effective approaches to single-family home design.

The Small Lots, Smart Designs competition is pioneering a strategic initiative for the greater utilization of space and creation of affordable housing within the City of Los Angeles. Participants are challenged to create an innovative housing solution for a prototypical narrow interior lot, typically found in multi-family zones and along commercial corridors, using the guidance of a new city ordinance (Ordinance 176354.)

Small Lots, Smart Designs competition aims to generate a free catalogue of expedited design templates (indicating pre-approved parcel map configurations) that will be made available to developers and homeowners.

Select designs may be plan-checked and developed into a set of "off the shelf" standard plans that could be used on typical small lot subdivisions throughout the City and made available, for a fee (goes to the designer), to builders and developers seeking well-designed and expedited designs.

Publications, Awards, and Prizes:

The winning professional participant will be commissioned to design a Small Lot Subdivision Project for Enterprise Home Ownership Partners. In addition, will present his/her/their submission at a workshop at Enterprise Foundation's 2006 National Network Conference.

Student winners will be awarded cash prizes. The competition will provide a real world based opportunity to have their designs critiqued and show cased. This is a fantastic opportunity for students before they enter the workforce. It is an opportunity for students to display their designs to a variety of distinguished judges whom include professional architects, Los Angeles City personnel, and members of the affordable housing industry. Additionally, the winning student participant will be awarded with admission to Enterprise Foundation's 2006 National Network Conference.

Competition Hosts:
The Enterprise Foundation, Los Angeles City's Mayors Office, L.A City Department of Planning, Building & Safety, Housing; and the Community Redevelopment Agency.
