Senior Building Inspector

DUTIES
Performs a variety of complex technical and professional inspection work in reviewing non-engineering plans and inspecting commercial, industrial and residential projects to insure that the California Building Codes and other related codes and standards are met.
Conducts field inspections of industrial, commercial and complex residential buildings during various phases of construction and remodeling to assure compliance with the above referenced codes and ordinances.
Reviews non-engineering plans including tenant improvement, and remodels for conformance with codes and ordinances.
Confers with architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and other interested parties; explains, interprets, and provides guidance regarding all applicable codes within area of responsibility.
Maintains records of building and inspection activities, and completes related reports. Issues certificates and permits as appropriate.
Supervises Code Enforcement Officers; may supervise technical or clerical staff.
Assists in researching problems and complaints regarding commercial and residential buildings, building construction and code compliance.
Responds to complex and sensitive building issues.
Assists in providing customer service at public counter, and assist the Building Official with Building & Safety Division related activities.
Provides lead direction to Building Inspectors and contract employees in the Building & Safety Division.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of GED equivalent. AA degree in Building Inspection, Construction Technology or related field is highly desirable and may substitute for one year of experience
Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience as a Building Inspector with a municipality.
One (1) year of supervisory experience or lead experience is desirable.
Knowledge Of
Thorough knowledge of California Building and related construction codes, state amendments, construction techniques and skills in applying construction codes.
Ability to
Work well with the public and with local contractors.
Read and understand complicated plans and blueprints.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Special Requirements
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid state drivers license.
Possession of ICBO/ICC inspector certifications in Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing for residential and commercial applications, or other recognized certifications.
An ICC/ICBO Plan Checker certification is also desirable.
