PLAN 205: Basic Concepts and Challenges of Technology Planning
(Offered through Planetizen Courses.)
Overview: Technology planning remains a blind spot for planners. Even though it is commonly recognized that telecommunications infrastructure is essential to future economic development and competitiveness (and although applications of technology will define places in the future), planners tend either not to grasp fully its implications or they neglect it altogether. In this course, participants will gain an overview of the major planning issues that information technology poses and how some communities have addressed these concerns.
The core project for participants will be a skeletal framework for a technology plan for their own communities.
Instructor: Charles Kaylor, the course instructor, has worked with state, county and local governments on these issues across the US and internationally. As founder and principal of the Public Sphere Information Group, Kaylor provides research and consulting services to governments and other organizations interested in the future of technology and technology planning. In addition to instructing this PLANetizen course, Kaylor also serves as the Academic Coordinator for English-language e-government and technology courses for the Organization of American States.
