Structures for Inclusion 5: Going to Scale, A Conference on Architecture & Community
City College Architectural Center
SFI5 focuses attention on practitioners and projects helping to overcome long-standing challenges in under-resourced communities. The conference, scheduled in New York City, April 2-3, 2005, at The City College of New York, will address the goal of "bringing to scale" lessons of context-specific design and ingenuity celebrated in previous conferences. The issue of scale will be addressed at multiple levels, the primary challenge being how to overcome institutional hurdles in expanding successful strategies from the model, or case-study level, to the system of delivery. What are the pathways for success whereby socially engaged architects and other design professionals can effectively serve a broader sector of the community? Speakers and panelists have been selected to present work that illustrates techniques for forming strategic alliances, creating economies of scale and achieving success in resolving bureaucratic or economic challenges, while embracing end-user concerns through innovative design.
