When Gentrification Comes Knocking -- Navigating Social Dynamics in Changing Neighborhoods

NeighborWorks Training Institute

When Gentrification Comes Knocking -- Navigating Social Dynamics in Changing Neighborhoods, sponsored by NeighborWorks® Training Institute and Freddie Mac, will be held on April 20 in Minneapolis. This symposium is for practitioners, board members, researchers and policymakers who work with neighborhoods that are experiencing gentrification now, have in the past, or may in the future.

From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., participants will engage in discussion panels, self-assessments and breakout sessions to learn or share solutions and ideas to incorporate into their real-life situations.

The forum will start off with a panel of experts who will discuss and give examples that illustrate the indicators of social stress in gentrifying neighborhoods. In a follow-up question and answer session, participants will further explore panelists experiences and how they are relevant to other neighborhoods.

Afterward, each participant will complete a brief self-assessment of the extent to which their neighborhood is vulnerable to or experiencing social stresses that may come with gentrification. Examples from participants will be highlighted and discussed by the group.

Filmmaker Linda Goode Bryant, the luncheon keynote speaker, will show clips from and discuss her award-winning PBS P.O.V. documentary Flag Wars about one gentrifying neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. Flag Wars is a poignant 90-minute account of economic competition between two historically oppressed groups, seen through the politics and pain of gentrification. Find out more about Flag Wars online at www.pbs.org/pov/flagwars.

After the luncheon, participants will engage in breakout sessions that will delve into gentrification topics regarding racial dynamics, negotiating competing interests, myths and realities, broad-based neighborhood response and cultivating social connection.

When Gentrification Comes Knocking Navigating Social Dynamics in Changing Neighborhoods is April 20 at the Hilton Minneapolis, 1001 Marquette Avenue, Minneapolis, MN. The cost to attend is $185 and includes the plenaries, workshops, all materials, continental breakfast, luncheon and the NeighborWorks® Training Institute networking reception that evening at the Hilton Minneapolis.
