CNU XI: The Conference Of The Year
Congress for the New Urbanism
The Congress is an annual event put on by the Congress for the New Urbanism. This is the first time it's been in the D.C. area since 1993.
The Congress, June 19 to 22, combines the most informative and inspiring speakers with intense interdisciplinary networking. Speakers include:
* Author James H. Kunstler, whose provocative critiques of dismal places have shown millions of people how architecture and planning affect their lives.
* United Kingdom Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, whose national policies for neighborhood redevelopment offer possible models for the United States.
* Epidemiologist Richard Jackson of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who targets suburban sprawl as a new type of epidemic.
* Long-time New Urbanism leaders Peter Calthorpe, Andres Duany, Stefanos Polyzoides, and Daniel Solomon, on the state of the art in the New Urbanism.
This is a great opportunity for people involved in the Washington area to get an international, interdisciplinary critique of how the area is today and what we are planning for the future. Tours will show visitors how we are repairing sprawl in Maryland and Virginia, which CNU calls the world's most advanced suburban redevelopment areas. The first day of the Congress is packed with these and other local tours.
Also on the first day of the event, there are opportunities for newcomers and old-timers alike to dive into intense education. For people new to New Urbanism, there is a day-long course called New Urbanism 101. More experienced practitioners will want to enroll in advanced sessions on marketing, transit integration, or other detailed subjects.
Throughout the Congress, there will also be lunches, dinners, and parties. In prior years, these networking events have led to some of the most important collaborations and advances in the field. Research into dead malls, new development partnerships, and new publications have all been born at Congresses past.
