Everyone benefits when thorough and thoughtful planning results in a sustainable future for your metropolitan region. And now, you have the opportunity to let the world know what your city or metropolitan area is planning for its future growth -- to create a sustainable energy future.

Gas Technology Institute, in cooperation with the United States Department of Energy and the energy industry, is conducting the first-ever U.S Competition on Metropolitan Energy Design.

Based on the theme, Energizing America's Cities, the competition will identify the most effective and creative plans -- describing current programs and future options -- to meet growing energy needs in our cities and metropolitan areas.

Our aim? Uncover the most creative plans and solutions from metropolitan areas across the United States regarding electricity production, alternative transportation fuels, future technologies, energy efficiency and renewables.

The Competition will narrow the field of entrants to eight, for recognition at a conference to be held in Chicago, May 30th and 31st, 2002 at the Hilton Palmer House. At that event, the single best regional design strategy will be selected.

That winning team will represent the United States at an international competition for Sustainable Urban Energy Design, in Tokyo, Japan, in June 2003, as part of the 22nd World Gas Conference. Resources will be provided to help the U.S. team prepare for the event, at which teams from seven other countries will share their long-term (100 year) energy and environmental plans for their selected cities and regions.
