Climate and Sustainability Outreach Fellow - AmeriCorps
The City of Piedmont is looking for an enthusiastic Climate Fellow to assist staff in implementing climate action plans and programs that will help the city reach its sustainability and greenhouse gas emission reduction goals, as included in its recently adopted Climate Action Plan 2.0.
The Climate Fellow work will mainly focus on three areas: the first area will be geared towards assisting City staff in developing a comprehensive climate action public engagement plan to educate and work with the community (create communication materials, develop an on-line emissions tracking tool for the community with interactive GIS layers, write informational reports, help organize workshops, etc.); the second area of work is to help in the implementation of energy efficient and carbon-free measures and programs for residential buildings, transportation options in our community, as well as municipal operations and facilities (work with city staff and the community to identify programs, technologies, and services that suit Piedmont's needs and profile, look for opportunities to fund programs, etc.). The third area of focus is working updating the city-wide greenhouse gas emissions inventory to report to the Global Covenant of Mayors, of which the City is signatory. Other tasks will include building and maintaining partnerships with community groups, public agencies, service providers, and other local governments.
The position will involve working in a regular office environment, interacting with staff from the city and outside agencies and environmental groups by phone and in person, attending local meetings with a sustainability focus, working on research and data collection, and writing reports and articles for publication on the city's website, community-based group public boards, and in news outlets. Other tasks will involve identifying, and coordinating with partners, resources, services and options that best match the city’s energy profile and outreach needs.
The City of Piedmont has been able to host and partner with CivicSpark Fellows for three years; this has provided Staff with a solid knowledge base and experience to support our Climate Fellows, and provide a strong platform to help them grow professionally. The fellow will team with staff to help the City join environmental and sustainability forces in the region and to share our experience with other jurisdictions.
