Amarillo sits at the crossroads of America, almost equidistant from both coasts, with a population of 199,000 residents and covering 100 square miles. Amarillo is the 13th largest city in Texas in terms of population. The Amarillo Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a federally mandated administrative agency responsible for coordination of the highway, transit, and land use planning process necessary to receive federal funds for highway and transit improvements. The purpose of the MPO is to provide local citizens and elected officials the opportunity to be involved in the transportation planning process. The Amarillo MPO consists of a Policy Committee, a Technical Committee, and the MPO staff. The MPO serves the City of Amarillo, parts of Potter and Randall counties, and the Texas Department of Transportation Amarillo District.

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Planning, this position is responsible for the planning and administrative activities of the Amarillo MPO. The ideal candidate is an innovative leader and strategic thinker with the skills and experience needed conceive and implement sound transportation planning initiatives. Excellent project management skills are required to deliver streamlined, customer-focused processes that enhance efficiencies and deliver quality service. An individual who has the vision, insight, and experience to see the broader picture in terms of community progress and growth is desired. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, elected officials, employees, and state agencies. Maturity, self-confidence, and strength of professional convictions are required in order to provide administrative insight and counsel to committees and stakeholders of the MPO. A demonstrated ability to be politically astute yet diplomatic when presenting professional views, as well as being committed to carrying out ultimate decisions in a timely manner will be essential.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in planning, GIS, or a related field and a minimum of five years of MPO transportation planning experience in municipal transportation operations in a supervisory capacity. AICP Certification, TPCB Professional Transportation Planner Credential, or the ability to obtain either within three (3) years of employment is required.
