Will work with colleges for school credit 

Job Type: Part/Full-Time, Remote/Onsite, min. 20 hours/week

With such a high concentration of people, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA) has an important role in overseeing 900+ acres of open space, ensuring an exceptional quality of life for Alexandria’s residents and protecting the region’s natural resources. The Park Planning, Capital Development and Waterfront Division is committed to maintaining and improving these public spaces.  

Position Descriptions:   

Park Planning GIS Associate (1 individual) 

Seeking highly motivated individuals with experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The candidates will update park and recreation data for the City of Alexandria ParkLink application. Work will include site visits to various Alexandria parks to collect and verify data, development of new datasets, and other GIS projects as assigned. Candidates will work independently and must take responsibility for their projects. 

Candidates should be familiar with GIS concepts and have some knowledge of GIS theory and practice including basic GIS analytical functions. Ideal candidates will possess ability to create maps and visual layouts, edit and create data within ArcGIS webapps and ArcPro, and extract raster data sets from aerial and satellite imagery such as park amenities and structures. 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Enrollment in a College Degree Program for Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Earth Sciences, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field. 
  • Completion of coursework in ArcGIS applications 
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 2+ years of experience with ESRI ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro 
  • Experience using ArcGIS Story Maps 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite Programs
