The role:
Our Urban Mobility Office (UMO) delivers the design, development and implementation of complex multimodal transportation mega projects and systems for the most densely populated and fastest growing geographical region in the state. As the deputy policy director, you will provide management and direction to generate a consistent strategy and coordinated approach for policy and planning efforts in support of the Urban Mobility Strategy, including management of project teams.

A day in the life:
- Manage and direct comprehensive policy and planning programs, and recommend revisions of policies, procedures and practices.
- Direct the implementation of policy revisions, long-range planning efforts, implementation of relevant transportation plans, and development and implementation of complex transportation and investment strategies.
- Provide counsel and guidance to office leadership on all policy related matters.
- Serve as representative on relevant agency decision-making committees and represent our agency on a regional and statewide basis by serving on external and other committees.
- Organize and direct multi-disciplinary, multi-jurisdictional project teams to work on complex and politically sensitive issues.
- Conduct public hearings and give presentations to local officials, the Oregon Transportation Commission, staff and legislators regarding transportation projects.
- Guide, develop, motivate and manage staff; set overall performance levels and expectations.
- Keep agency and key stakeholders informed of all significant issues and ensure all material decisions are approved by the agency.
- Ensure project teams are staffed with the appropriate technical skills to successfully deliver quality projects within scope, schedule and budget.
- Work in an office environment with hybrid work options available and occasional statewide travel and regular travel within the area/region required.

Seven years of supervision, management, or progressively related experience;
OR
Four years of related experience and a bachelor's degree in a related field.

- Extensive experience and proven success building consensus and support for complex initiatives by incorporating input from diverse stakeholder interests.
- Experience developing policies, projects, and initiatives in a way that centers equity in the process and outcomes.
- A thorough knowledge of state and federal transportation laws and regulations.
- Proven ability to lead and manage a large, diversified staff and to give responsible, professional direction and advice.
- Proven ability to interpret and communicate organizational policies and initiatives and to lead staff in implementation of same.
