Kendig Keast Collaborative (KKC) seeks to hire a Senior Associate for our zoning and land development regulation practice. This individual will join a national consulting firm with nearly 45 years of successful client interaction. We seek candidates who have the background and drive to assist our clients with community planning, design and implementation with an emphasis on zoning and development codes and other implementation-related projects.

The ideal applicant will have at least eight (8) years of experience in community planning, design and plan implementation through zoning and other land development regulations, working for a city or county planning department, with a preference for those with related experience consulting local government clients. We will also seriously consider applicants with a land use law background provided they have direct experience in crafting and implementing regulations that advance community planning objectives. A master’s degree in urban planning or a closely related field is preferred (or a J.D. or Esq. for applicants with a land use law background), although a combination of a bachelor’s degree and related professional experience may be considered. AICP and/or other professional certifications are strongly preferred.

We seek an individual who can demonstrate technical expertise and hands-on experience in evaluating, drafting, amending, and administering development regulations for entire jurisdictions as well as particular districts and priority areas. Preferably this will include experience with all aspects of local development regulations (e.g., zoning, subdivision, infrastructure and design standards, parking/loading, landscaping, signs, environmental resources, neighborhood conservation, administrative procedures, nonconformities, etc.), whether packaged into unified development codes or addressed as distinct code elements. Exposure to various philosophies and techniques for regulating land use and shaping community form is essential, especially as this familiarity can be applied in “hybrid” codes that appeal to a wide range of client communities.

Experience with community outreach and public engagement activities is also important, particularly related to facilitating stakeholder and leadership consensus that enables successful adoption and implementation of new or amended development regulations. The candidate’s career progression should indicate increasingly challenging assignments and growing leadership and supervisory responsibilities.

The successful candidate will immediately serve as a deputy project manager, in coordination with KKC principals, and will evolve into a lead project management role based on effective performance and once familiar with the firm’s approach and practices. Specific duties will include directly managing zoning and development code projects, and overseeing and supporting similar projects led by other KKC personnel. This will involve facilitating the overall code drafting/amendment process (including ensuring conformance with the unique statutory framework of each state where KKC initiates a local code project), completing hands-on aspects of the work (including research and data collection, field reconnaissance, and writing and editing), providing input on the work of project staff and subconsultants to generate quality and timely work products (including editing, design and creation of code graphics and illustrations, and related GIS analysis and mapping), interacting with client representatives and constituents, overseeing budgets and schedules, and ensuring responsiveness and client satisfaction. Senior personnel also participate in business development activities and help to expand our areas of practice. This includes securing speaking engagements, lead roles in seminars and continuing education programs, and publication opportunities to continue our leadership role within the urban planning profession. Periodic travel to client communities and for business development activities will be necessary.

Strong writing, presentation, graphic, analytical, and computer skills are essential for the successful applicant. At a minimum, the applicant must clearly demonstrate competence with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Preference will be given to those with additional background working with ArcGIS, Adobe software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, etc.) and SketchUp, as well as HTML to draft codes directly in and to support our proprietary software, enCodePlus. Experience in land development and project design is a plus. In addition to these technical capabilities, the candidate we seek must be highly motivated and energetic; diligent, thorough, well-organized and detail oriented; personable; curious to learn about the communities we serve; and eager for exposure to new subjects and opportunities for professional growth and career advancement. Mentoring of younger associates is also expected.

This is a remote position with potential to evolve into a hybrid position (part-time remote/part-time in office). The ideal candidate is currently or will soon be physically located in the Denver Metro region. We may consider candidates outside the Denver Metro region depending on experience and expertise.
