This City of Manhattan, Kansas has an excellent opportunity to join the Community Development Department as a Planner I/II in the Current Planning Division.
Are you a resourceful, dedicated, creative and enthusiastic professional planner? Do you have passion and experience in floodplain management, resiliency, sustainability, or environmental planning and desire to make a meaningful impact in your community? Do you want the opportunity to work with your neighbors, community groups and developers to help your community grow in a sustainable manner? Do you want to be a part of a wide variety of planning projects in a fun, creative and well-staffed planning department? While this position is focused on resiliency planning, it also has a secondary role in current planning, assisting with the Board of Zoning Appeals. This position also plays a vital role in an assortment of initiatives including neighborhood engagement, housing, and redevelopment planning in the downtown and other transitioning areas of the community.
We are looking for a graduate from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in planning, urban design, geography, landscape architecture, or public administration, although master's degree in planning is preferred. The Planner II position must have a minimum of two years of progressively responsible professional planning experience, preferably in municipal public sector planning, as well as obtained or have the ability to obtain, certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
About Manhattan, Kansas. Our community is in the heart of the gorgeous Flint Hills Region of northeast Kansas and is home to Kansas State University (KSU) and Fort Riley. Thanks to these major community institutions, our small city (approximately 56,000) offers diversity and vibrancy, and is the regional leader in education, health care, cultural events and the arts, recreation, and sports. Downtown Manhattan has recently undergone major redevelopment. Likewise, the Aggieville Business District, the dining and entertainment district next to KSU, is in the beginning stages of a major redevelopment effort to expand and upgrade the beloved college commercial district.
The Manhattan region is experiencing unprecedented growth and the city is committed to sound progressive and forward-thinking municipal planning. The city is in the final stages of completing a Strategic Plan that identified the need to establish a Community Resiliency Committee, for which this planning position with serve as staff liaison. The Community Development Department is responsible for guiding this growth and development of the community while preserving the environment and maintaining a high quality of life. The city would like to broaden these efforts by hiring a Resiliency Planner to develop resiliency and sustainability initiatives and manage the City’s floodplains and mitigation activities.
