The City of Cedar Rapids is hiring a Planner I or Planner II. Please see the respective job descriptions below:

Salary:

  • Planner I $54,371.20- $73,382.40 Annually
  • Planner II $58,156.80- $78,520.00 Annually

Position Schedule: Monday- Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm 
 
Planner I:
Provides professional services and assistance for a range of planning, urban design, economic development and related Department services and activities.
 
Planner II:
Provides professional services and assistance for a range of planning, urban design, economic development and related Department services and activities. The Planner II classification is distinguished from the Planner I classification by the increased complexity and diversity of the planning developed by individuals in this classification.
 
Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (if applicable) and drug screen are required prior to employment with the City of Cedar Rapids.

Examples of Essential Duties:

I/II:

  • Coordinates the development and implementation of long-range planning activities
  • Develops and maintains GIS-based projects for data analysis related to long-range planning, annexations, and infrastructure investment.
  • Researches best practices and innovative strategies related to long-range planning activities and other planning principles, projects, and makes appropriate recommendations.
  • Prepares reports, open house display materials and documentation related to planning projects.
  • Provides information and responds to internal requests and questions from the public, developers, and other stakeholders
  • Analyzes and prepares recommendations for ordinance and policy amendments for consideration 
  • Participates in the administration of the Neighborhood Services Program including work plans and budgets, and other related activates.
  • Researches best practices and innovative strategies for increasing quality of life and social offerings for the purposes of workforce retention and attraction.
  • Assists in research, reports and documentation regarding City participation in proposed economic development projects.
  • Assists in evaluation and monitoring of public improvements related to economic development projects and urban renewal areas.
  • Performs related work as required.

Planner I:

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree Urban and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Public Administration or related field and
  • Up to ONE (1) year related experience in planning, urban design, or public administration or
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population

Planner II:

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree Urban and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Public Administration or related field and
  • Three to five years of experience in planning, urban design, or public administration or
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population
