The City of Pittsburg seeks an ASSISTANT PLANNER for the Planning Division in the Community and Economic Development Department.

(City Manager may approve additional recruitment incentives for the selected hire) 

The Planning Division facilitates new development consistent with the City's General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Sign Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and other State, Federal and local regulations to maintain and enhance the community's quality of life through safety, revenue streams, and sustainability.

The Assistant Planner is an entry level professional class in the planning series and is responsible for land use and urban planning project management, research, data collections, analysis, and report preparation. Incumbents will receive direct supervision and training on assignments and as experience is gained, assignments will become more diversified and complex.  This career is for you if you enjoy providing customer service to a variety of groups, interested in learning and developing your career, being analytical and data driven, and working in a team environment.

 Ideal Candidate for Assistant Planner

  • Knowledgeable of local government functions
  • Knowledgeable of regulations, codes, and California laws that pertain to subdivisions, annexations, zoning, land use, and CEQA/NEPA
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Great interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Must possess a Bachelor's degree in city or regional planning or a related field.

EXPERIENCE: Must possess one year of experience in city or county planning.

LICENSE: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license and proof of auto liability insurance is required.

The City of Pittsburg is a full-service city following the council-manager form of government. We have about 290 full time employees and about 350 employees total (depending on the season).  Pittsburg is currently organized into the following departments: City Management, Community and Economic Development (Building, Economic Development, Code Enforcement, and Planning), Community Services (Housing Authority, Pittsburg Power Company, and the Successor Agency to the former Redevelopment Agency), Recreation, Human Resources, Finance, Police, and Public Works (Engineering, Operations/Maintenance, Utilities, Facilities, Parks, and Water Treatment). Fire Protection services are provided by the Contra Costa County Consolidated Fire Department.  Pittsburg’s total budget for FY 21/22 is $225.9 million and a General Fund budget of $51.3 million.
