New Hanover County is looking for two individuals to join the growing Planning and Land Use department as a Workforce Housing Planner and a Current Planner, Development Review. Our department is comprised of a team of dedicated professionals who oversee research, planning, development review, and zoning compliance activities to ensure orderly growth and development for New Hanover County.

We are committed to a pragmatic, solution-oriented approach to addressing the ongoing challenges of working with stakeholders to implement the county's long-term vision and lay a framework for the next 20-30 years of growth and development in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The Workforce Housing Planner position will primarily be responsible for developing and administering housing policy and programs, working to reduce barriers to housing affordability, and working with a variety of stakeholders on community planning efforts. This position is the staff liaison for the joint City of Wilmington/New Hanover County Workforce Housing Advisory Committee, which has recently completed a comprehensive housing study and housing work plan that will be implemented over the coming five years. Immediate projects include efforts to audit and update development regulations, determine methods to incentivize workforce housing, and prepare educational materials related to a proposed 2022 housing bond.

The Current Planner, Development Review position will primarily be responsible for reviewing development proposals and site plans to ensure compliance with long range plans, zoning codes, flood ordinances, and related regulations. The ideal candidate for this position would be familiar with the different stages of the zoning and subdivision application processes and looking for opportunities to shape a growing suburban built environment.

These positions are open until filled; however, priority consideration will be given to applications received by October 12, 2021.

New Hanover County is an exciting place to live and work. People may know of the Wilmington, NC area's historic downtown, arts and cultural scene, coastal beach towns, state and local parks, and Univeristy of North Carolina-Wilmington (UNCW) campus, but they may not be aware that our planning jurisdiction is one of the most developed unincorporated areas in North Carolina and includes a wide variety of neighborhoods, from rural communities to high-end suburbs. We are experiencing steady growth, and our department is at the forefront of preparing the foundation for our coastal community's future. In addition, New Hanover County provides a generous benefits package that includes a 401k contribution, paid parental leave, an additional personal floating holiday for religious/cultural observances not included on the designated holiday schedule, and opportunities to earn additional leave, along with the traditional medical benefits and personal and sick leave.
