About the Opportunity 

We are excited to hire a full-time Urban Planner I to join our Transportation Department, Planning Division! The purpose of this position is to perform professional and technical planning and research work for the Transportation Planning Division of the Transportation Department. The position will work under general direction on various transportation planning projects, including planning for new greenways, pedestrian facilities, bicycle facilities, streetscapes, and parking.  The transportation urban planner I will also participate in development review as needed,  provide support in developing and holding public engagement activities, provide information to the public and answer questions pertaining to current and ongoing projects.   

Hiring Rate: $23.06 per hour 
Full Salary Range: $23.06 - $34.59 per hour

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in developing urban mobility programs, such as the parklets program, bike share program, and other micro-mobility initiatives.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of transportation planning policies

  • Provides assistance in reviewing subdivision plats for minor subdivisions, Level I, II, and III development project applications for compliance with transportation standards. 

  • Advises general public, developers, City staff and design professionals in relation to Unified Development Ordinance, and development regulations, standards and other requirements.

  • Develops GIS maps for the division to support current and ongoing projects.

  • Provides assistance with public engagement activities, including neighborhood meetings, committee and commission meetings, and project-specific outreach.

  • Updates website with division information. Deletes old information and checks functionality daily.

  • Develops and edits planning documents.

  • Performs administrative functions including preparing staff reports, creating presentations, taking notes, preparing agendas, performing research, and compiling data.

  • Performs field visits, collects data, analyzes data, and prepares reports.

  • Provides customer service for the transportation planning division and transportation department and related functions.

Supplemental Functions:

  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Education & Experience

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Urban Design, Public Affairs/Policy, Geography, Transportation Planning, Transportation Engineering, Landscape Architecture or a related field, with at least one (1) year of experience in transportation planning, urban design or a similar area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. 

  • Experience with GIS and/or graphics software including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions

Knowledge:

  • The principles, practices and trends of transportation planning, transportation engineering, land use planning, urban design, travel demand management, etc. 

  • Advanced knowledge of procedures and practices to analyze and resolve unusual or difficult problems.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to process and use complicated workplace data and graphics; summarize, compare and identify trends between you among detailed forms, tables, graphs, diagrams, maps, etc. Read and understand basic workplace data, such as simple forms, tables, graphs, schedules, etc.

  • Ability to perform advanced research on organizational policies and procedures, best practices and innovative techniques.

  • Ability to compile data into a formal report or recommendation shared with others and often verbally presented.

  • Ability to think creatively in all areas for the purpose of increasing efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written form.

  • Ability to research program documents and narrative materials, and develop reports from information gathered.

  • Ability to analyze situations to pinpoint problems and assist with solving problems or identifying sources of obstacles.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural guidelines and to apply this understanding to tasks.
