The Assistant Director of Planning is a management-level class in the Community and Economic Development Department, responsible for planning, organizing and directing the work activities of the Planning Division staff. The Assistant Director of Planning performs a variety of supervisory, administrative and technical work in the development, implementation and maintenance of current and long range plans, makes recommendations to the City Council and Planning Commission on planning projects and issues, and performs other planning-related duties.

About the Position
The City seeks an energetic, enthusiastic, and hardworking individual to manage the City’s Planning   Division. The City is currently undergoing a comprehensive general plan update and reuse plan, commencing updates to the City’s housing element, and preparing for a comprehensive zoning code update. The City utilizes a robust GIS system, and is currently implementing online permitting software to streamline the permit finding and application process. The selected candidate should be comfortable utilizing technology in their day-to-day work, and seek innovative ways to improves processes. The City of Pittsburg is proud of the “red carpet” approach staff takes to deliver the highest possible level of service to our community.

The Assistant Director of Planning will be expected to work closely with the City’s Economic Development Division to identify ways to bring jobs to Pittsburg, while also planning for diverse housing opportunities and reuse of multiple brownfield sites. The Assistant Director of Planning will also serve as Secretary to the Planning Commission, and will be tasked with presenting projects before the City Council, and  staffing the Land Use Subcommittee.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification)
Education and/or Experience:  A Bachelor’s degree in city or regional planning, engineering, public administration or a related field and five years of increasingly responsible experience in city or county planning, and at least two years in responsible management/ supervising capacity.  A Master’s degree in planning or related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

License:  Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license.  

Certificate:  Possession of American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certificate is desirable.
