Fairfax County is seeking a Planner III within the Planning Division of the Department of Planning and Development. The Planner III serves as a senior planner and project manager for comprehensive planning activities, such as managing moderate to complex planning studies, plan amendments, and/or review of development applications. Formulates work programs; conducts analyses on existing conditions and trends; researches, analyzes, and prepares policy analyses; and presents findings and recommendations. Develops and leads public engagement activities related to projects; provides support for or presents to different audiences, such as county staff, the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, business groups, community groups, or other stakeholders. Prepares a variety of written and illustrative materials such as research papers, conceptual graphics, GIS maps and analysis, qualitative and quantitative analysis, staff reports, and public hearing items. Occasionally prepares land use analyses associated with the review of rezoning applications. May serve as leader of staff team or consultant studies; act as liaison to task forces or other stakeholder groups; and/or represent the office on county and regional committees. May also assist with employment forecasting, and Comprehensive Plan monitoring and quantification activities. Performs other duties as assigned.

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a planning related field; plus four years of experience in a planning-related field.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
- Individual must be willing to participate in occasional work assignments and meetings during the evening and weekend hours.
Strong written and oral communication abilities. Strong analytical skills. Extensive professional experience in planning, policy development, Comprehensive Plan quantification, project management, presentation, group facilitation, and community engagement. Public agency experience in planning for mixed use, transit-oriented development, and infill and revitalization proposals. Ability to use GIS, quantification, and design applications. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Master’s degree in planning, landscape architecture, or closely related field.
Position is primarily sedentary; however, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items under 15 pounds in weight. Work assignments may also require that the employee make site visits and inspections. Work requires the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment.
