A small creative consulting firm is seeking to hire a Senior Environmental Planner/Designer for our office in upstate New York. Preferred candidate will have six or more years of experience. Ideal candidate will have private sector consulting experience and able to manage several planning and design projects including substantial public engagement and stakeholder outreach. Behan Planning and Design is a national award-winning woman-owned business with over 25 years of experience providing environmental planning and natural resource expertise along with landscape architectural design of parks, neighborhoods, downtowns, waterfronts, and streetscapes. We offer a broad range of services, including landscape architecture at the site, corridor, neighborhood and community scale coupled with land use planning, zoning code and design guideline preparation. We conduct open space and natural resources conservation planning, community engagement and online tool deployment for public education and outreach.
Our clients include state, county, and municipal agencies as well as construction firms, real estate professionals, attorneys, landowners, and other planning and design companies. Behan Planning and Design is looking for a motivated individual to join our energetic, successful team of planners and designers to collaborate on a wide range of challenging assignments. Requires a solid knowledge of environmental and comprehensive planning processes, land use and zoning techniques, and public outreach methods. Knowledge of geographic information systems, Adobe products, CAD, SketchUp etc. a plus. Must have the ability to conduct research in an orderly and timely manner, have the ability to analyze data, resolve abstract problems and issues, and have the ability to collaborate in a team setting.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Proposal writing, budgeting, and consultant team coordination.
- Preparation of comprehensive plans and related elements including transportation, natural resources conservation, hazard mitigation and environmental sustainability.
- Development of municipal codes including zoning, subdivision, complete streets and resource protection.
- Coordination of multidisciplinary teams of professionals and managing deliverables.
- Creation of GIS maps, sketches and graphics and report writing and graphic design.
- Collaboration with clients including public meeting notices, invoicing, and project management.
- Design of public participation plans and program delivery including charrettes, public workshops, community surveys, and managing online engagement.
Majority of work is performed under normal office conditions. Field trips are conducted as necessary and may involve working in a range of natural and built environments including but not limited to highway corridors, construction sites, farms and forests. Availability to travel post COVID-19 restrictions.
EDUCATION: Master's degree in planning, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, or economics,
EXPERIENCE: Six (6) years of professional level urban planning, urban design, or natural resources planning experience.
EQUIVALENCY (IES): A bachelor's degree in a specified field plus ten (10) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
LICENSE and/or CERTIFICATION(S): Valid driver's license with good driving record.
PREFERENCE(S): American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification or licensure in design profession is a preferred.
