SALARY: $123,358 - $161,857
The City of Sacramento seeks a Planning Director to lead the planning division across current planning, long range planning, new growth, urban design, and zoning administration. The position will represent the City and provide technical guidance and expertise to staff, City leadership, and various community boards, committees, and commissions. The ideal candidate will bring several years of experience in managing complex technical long range, current, and environmental planning projects and will have an ability to understand the details, as well as the greater planning strategy, and execute the City’s planning vision and goals.
The Planning Director oversees 50 staff and a budget of $9.3 million across six sections: current planning, long range planning, new growth, urban design, and zoning administration. This position reports to the Community Development Director and is responsible for providing policy and technical direction and guidance to staff and city leadership, as well as assisting in meeting the goals of the General Plan for the City through the development, implementation and maintenance of programs and ordinances. This position also manages key development projects, prepares the strategic action plan for the Planning Division and guides the division towards meeting its goals. The Planning Director represents the City and the Community Development Director to multiple commissions, boards, and the City Council.

The Planning Director will help develop a vision for City planning, nurture an organizational culture that builds trust in the community, strategically manage Sacramento’s unique environment, and make planning decisions that are fair, educated, and well informed. California municipal planning experience in an urban environment and knowledge of CEQA are highly desirable. We are looking for a true leader, someone who can find creative solutions to get things done and actualize organizational improvements.
