The County of San Diego is seeking a dynamic, independent, and innovative leader to fill a vacancy for Chief, Departmental Operations of the Sustainability Division. This unclassified management level position is in Planning & Development Services (PDS), which is part of the County’s Land Use & Environment Group; and will report to PDS executive management.
The Chief of Sustainability will be responsible for leading efforts to help communities thrive while protecting the region’s unique and diverse natural resources. The Chief of Sustainability leads the teams developing the updated Climate Action Plan (CAP) and North County Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP), as well as implementing existing sustainability programs such as sustainable ground water management and the Purchase of Agricultural Easements. Through leadership, this Chief will help guide the teams that conduct research and policy analysis, develop and implement sustainability programs, engage in equitable community outreach, and other related efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the unincorporated county and at County facilities, and ensure our resources are protected for the generations to come.
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, high profile, and demanding environment; has depth and breadth of experience in the disciplines of strategic planning, project management, negotiating, and outcome-based performance management; have experience in land use, environmental, and sustainability planning; and have strong relationship building and collaboration skills with a track record of getting things done. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be a detail and solution-oriented individual responsible for ensuring excellent customer service and working collaboratively with stakeholders. Relevant professional and/or academic experience can include, but is not limited to the following: development of climate action plan measures and/or climate action plan policies, GHG inventories, emissions monitoring and reporting, ordinance/policy development, community plans, agricultural conservation, clean transportation technology and trends, carbon sequestration/carbon offsets, public engagement, environmental justice, and collaborative partnerships.
