The City of Malibu is a unique coastal environment with a well-informed, highly engaged community of approximately 13,000. The community places a high priority on thoughtful planning. Challenges include balancing protection of the rural character and natural resources treasured by the community and the pressures of being a very popular visitor destination with large amounts of public open space under multi-agency control.
The Planning Director oversees and coordinates a complex development review (current planning) process involving local zoning and the City’s certified Local Coastal Program, as well as long range planning and ensuring compliance with state and federal mandates and annual Council work plan goals. As the City is still recovering from the Woolsey Fire of November 2018 which destroyed 450 homes, the position is also responsible for ensuring an effective, streamlined review process for fire rebuild projects. The Planning Director also oversees the City’s code enforcement program.
