This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic, forward-thinking individual to help shape the future of a thriving community that is committed to meaningful and strategic growth. In November 2018, the residents of the City of Bakersfield expressed their commitment to improving the quality of life in the community by passing the first ever local sales tax measure, known as the “Public Services and Vital Safety Measure.” As a result of this measure, the Development Services Department was allocated an additional $13.5 million for FY 19/20 to recreate the City’s Economic Development Program and to establish a Homeless Housing, Initiatives, and Services Program. The new Economic Development Director will play an instrumental role in the development of the new Economic Development Program and ultimately the future of Bakersfield overall.

Bakersfield is the ninth largest city in California. A new report from the National Association of Realtors rates Bakersfield in their top ten cities to live in for millennials, due to the relatively low cost of housing, minimal traffic, job growth and strong economic outlook. Bakersfield offers a vast array of restaurants and breweries, music festivals, hiking trails, lakes, museums, and a downtown art walk — exactly what you'd expect to find in a major up-and-coming city.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished strategic leader and creative problem solver who is excited by the opportunity and challenge of building a new significant program within the Development Services Department, from the ground up.

To be considered, please submit a detailed resume, cover letter, and a list of six work-related references (who will not be contacted until the late stages of the recruitment and will be coordinated with the successful candidate). Your resume should indicate the size of staff and budgets you have managed and also reflect both years and months with regard to the employment dates for current and prior positions held.
