Under general supervision of the Parking Supervisor, and reporting to the Police Captain, a Senior Parking Representative works variable days and hours enforcing campus and state parking rules and regulations by methodically patrolling parking lots and roads on foot and in a vehicle and writing parking citations. In addition, a parking officer provides a variety of other services to the campus community and is responsible for a small amount of daily administrative work.


Step 1- Minimum Required Qualifications:
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be selected to continue in the process outlined below.

Step 2- Personal History Questionnaire:
Applicants who meet the qualifications in Step 1 will be required to complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) for non-sworn employees. A deception detection examination such as a polygraph or voice stress test may be required. PHQ results will determine applicant suitability for continued consideration.

Step 3- Oral interview:
Applicants who successfully meet requirements in steps 1 and 2 will be invited to a panel interview with the UCSC Police Department. Upon successful completion of the panel interview, the panel will recommend applicants for step 4 (oral interview w/the Chief of Police).

Step 4- Oral interview with the Chief

Step 5-Personal History Statement:
Upon successful completion of interviews in Steps 3 and 4, applicants chosen to continue will be required to complete a Personal History Statement for non-sworn employees, POST 2-255 form to provide information used for background investigation purposes in accordance with POST commission regulation 1959.

Step 6- UCSC Police Department Background Investigation:
Applicants who successfully complete steps 1-5 must complete and successfully pass a thorough law enforcement level background investigation of personal and work history, including a fingerprint check of criminal history, psychological exam and a credit check. Authorized UCSC Police Department personnel certified as POST background investigators will conduct the background investigation on applicants. As part of the background investigation process, you may be subjected to a detection of deception examination, such as a polygraph or voice stress analysis to verify the truthfulness of information that applicants have provided on the PHS and to the background investigator directly.

Step 7- Informal Job Offer:
Applicants who successfully meet the requirements of all steps above may be considered for the position of Senior Parking Representative. Selected candidate(s) will be made an informal job offer contingent upon the successful completion of the following pre-employment background investigations: psychological evaluation and live scan.

Step 8- Formal Job Offer:
Selected candidates can expect a formal job offer once results from the psychological evaluation and live scan confirm suitability for employment.

Senior Parking Representatives will receive a uniform allowance in accordance with the terms of the UC/AFSCME Agreement, Article 39 - Uniforms.

Qualifications include:

Ability to independently evaluate each situation and exercise sound judgment to decide which action is warranted.

Skills to work tactfully, courteously and effectively with a diverse community of various racial, ethnic, and economic groups with diverse lifestyles and refrain from expressing prejudices toward any group of people or citing individuals based on biases or emotions.

Ability to present a positive, service-oriented public image and maintain a courteous and harmonious working relationship with the campus community, other department staff, and members of the public.

Ability to complete work with attention to detail and accuracy and print clear, accurate and legible citations, daily activity logs and reports.

Ability to read, understand, interpret and follow department policies, rules and California Vehicle Codes.

Some special conditions include:

Employee will be a staff member of the UC Santa Cruz Police Department and therefore must pass a thorough background investigation of personal and work history, including a fingerprint check of criminal history, psychological exam, physical exam, and a credit check. As part of the background investigation process, you may be subjected to a detection of deception examination, such as a polygraph or voice stress analysis to verify the truthfulness of information that applicants have provided on the PHS and to the background investigator directly.

Possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to travel to attend training, workshops or conferences away from the Santa Cruz, CA area.

Complete and successfully pass Law Enforcement level background check.

Successful applicants will participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

Possession of or the ability to obtain a current First Aid and CPR Certificate within six (6) months of hire.

Learn and maintain current knowledge of campus roadways, parking lots, and buildings and the locations of various departments within thirty (30) days of employment.

Ability to perform duties outdoors through all seasons of weather on foot or in a vehicle.

Per the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), this position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter. The selected candidate will be required to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect as defined by CANRA and will be required to sign a Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse prior to commencing employment. Per the Dependent Adult Abuse Reporting Act, this position has been identified as a mandated reporter pursuant to the California Welfare and institutions Code, Section 15630 and 15632.

This position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority as mandated by the Clery Act.

Safely perform the physical requirements necessary for this position. Lift moderate objects up to 42 lbs, with or without accommodation.

Must be able to regularly stand, walk on uneven surfaces and sit for extended periods of time.

Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs. Must be able to work alternate work schedule shift. Hours of work may be on an 8, 10, or 12 hour plan.

Must wear department issued uniform and equipment including but not limited to: (utility belt, radio, parking citation machines, flashlight, etc.)

Successfully pass internal training with designated training officer on the proper procedures to enforce parking and traffic regulations, the proper use of equipment and tools, and properly applying laws and regulations.

UCSC is a smoke and tobacco free campus. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) are strictly prohibited on any UCSC owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.
