Position Description

The Urban Studies Program at the University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in community based urban design and planning. This is a full-time position with a 9-month service period and begins September 2019 (Autumn Quarter).  Disciplinary background is open; however we are particularly interested in applicants with a demonstrated record of research in the areas of urban social justice, social change, and community engagement, broadly defined.

The successful candidate will be expected to move comfortably between theoretical work and action-oriented practice, integrate inclusive pedagogical techniques and technologies into teaching/learning, teach innovative studio style classes in the Urban Design degree program, offer select courses in other Urban Studies degrees as needed, actively participate in service to the university and profession, and promote a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students.

Established in 2001, the Urban Studies Program currently offers degrees leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Urban Development, a Bachelor of Science in Urban Design, a Master of Arts in Community Planning, and a Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies, along with a certificate program in Geographic Information Systems. The Urban Studies Program currently enrolls approximately 140 undergraduate and graduate students and has 13 full-time faculty and lecturers.

  • Research and teaching expertise in urban design.
  • Expertise in inclusive planning, participatory action research, and/or similar community engagement practices.
  • A Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) by the time of appointment in urban design, urban planning, or cognate fields (a candidate in the final stages of their dissertation would be appointed on an acting basis).
