Featured: Reforming Local Land Use Regulations To Increase Housing Production

To bring attention to the problem of insufficient housing production and its possible solutions, the White House held a webinar titled "Reducing Land Use and Zoning Restrictions" in October 2021. Brian Deese, director of the National Economic Council; Cecilia Rouse, chair of the Council of Economic Advisors; and Ed Glaeser, professor of economics at Harvard University, framed the issues, including the 3.8 million national housing unit shortage. Two panels composed of local and state officials discussed approaches to zoning regulation reform.

Message from PD&R Leadership: Elaine Ng, Region 9 Economic and Market Analysis Field Director, Discusses Housing Market Trends During the COVID-19 Pandemic

In the leadership message, PD&R's new field director for the Economic and Market Analysis Division (EMAD) in Region 9, Elaine Ng, introduces herself and discusses housing market trends during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ng describes her background and the role of field economists working in EMAD, and summarizes the behavior of the national housing and rental markets since the onset of the pandemic.

In Practice: Intergenerational Affordable Housing for LGBT Youth and Seniors in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles LGBT Center is headquartered at the Anita May Rosenstein Campus, which co-locates the center's administrative, program, and housing functions. The campus' two permanent housing developments, both completed in 2021, are the 25-unit Michaeljohn Horne & Thomas Eugene Jones Youth Housing building and the 98-unit Ariadne Getty Foundation Senior Housing Complex. The center also has a 100-bed homeless shelter, where individuals can stay for up to 18 months.

International & Philanthropic: HUD's Role in U.S. Climate Action Agenda

HUD has published a Climate Action Plan to reduce the agency's energy and carbon footprint. The plan rests on three principles: mitigation, adaptation, and environmental justice. To implement the plan, HUD has established the Climate and Environmental Justice Council. Moving forward, hud.gov/climate will be the hub for HUD's climate work. Next year, in November 2022, participating nations will reconvene for the United Nations Council of the Parties conference to further discuss their efforts toward limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
