The destruction of the Mesopotamian Marshlands is considered one of the worst environmental disasters in history.
"[Sadam Hussein conducted] sophisticated campaign of water diversion and marsh drainage that has reduced roughly 93 percent of [Iraq's legendary] marshes to dry, salt-encrused wasteland...UNEP described it as one of the worst environmental disasters in history, ranking it with the desiccation of the Aral Sea and the deforestation of the Amazon rainforests."
