Historic Preservation Programs Nixed By Obama

11 February 2010 - 7:00am

The Obama administration has cancelled two Federal programs - Save America's Treasures and Preserve America - that were responsible for the restoration of nearly 900 historic structures over the past 10 years.

The White House claims that "Both programs lack rigorous performance metrics and evaluation efforts so the benefits are unclear."

Donovan Rypkema of PlaceEconomics debates that conclusion over at Treehugger:

"This work meant 16,012 jobs (a job being one full time equivalent job for one year...the same way they are counting jobs for the Stimulus Program). The cost per job created? $13,780.

This compares with the White House announcement that the Stimulus Package is creating one job for every $248,000. Whose program is helping the economy?"

Reverse Obama's Decision

This decision needs to be reversed. Money is being squandered on projects not in the public's best interest, while important programs like historic preservation intiatives, are being cut. Too many buildings are being lost and will continue to be lost without adequate funding.

At a much larger economic scale, however, one mustn’t avoid calculating the tremendous and exceptional externalities of automobile dependency.
