Housing Authority Severs Ties With HUD
29 March 2005 - 1:00pm
The Dalton Housing Authority has become the first to sever its ties with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
"Dalton's independence is an example of what HUD has been trying to do nationally, said Michael Liu, assistant secretary for Public and Indian Housing.
...Ms. Bass said the worst thing is bureaucratic limitations from HUD that halt certain actions such as demolishing one housing facility she deems to be substandard.
...Freedom from HUD's thousands of pages of regulations, such as penalties for missing deadlines, is just one benefit of being independent, Ms. Johnson said."
