30 June 2004 - 12:00pm
Avant garde projects often fail to achieve harmony with Chinese culture.
China is the largest construction site in the world, and many architects from abroad have been lured by the huge Chinese market. According to the Beijing-based Architecture Journal "there are now more than 120 foreign and joint architecture firms in China," and "over 140 of the 200 top world engineering companies and design consortiums have set up branches in the country." Although familiar with the culture and the building sites, Chinese architects have not won many design contracts for landmark buildings in major cities.
