Community Development Director
The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is the major population and economic center in southeastern Alaska and the capital of the state. The City is located in an extremely beautiful setting on Alaska’s Inside Passage, surrounded by tree-covered mountains in the middle of the largest temperate rain forest in North America. The CBJ encompasses an area of 3600 square miles and has a population of 30,000. Juneau is not on a highway system and is only accessible by air and by the Alaska Marine Highway system.
The City and Borough of Juneau is seeking an individual who has a successful history of running an interdisciplinary team charged with comprehensive community planning, assuring public safety through the application and enforcement of building codes, and successfully assisting our community partners in balancing development needs and quality of life.
The successful candidate will have expert level knowledge in community planning, a keen interest in applying best practices in urban development to the unique challenges and opportunities found in our community, possess strong oral and written communication skills, be skilled in building relationships with all aspects of the community, be able to resolve conflict and build consensus where there are differing opinions and interests, provide support and expertise to the Planning Commission, have a strong history of interpreting and applying building and land use codes, and lead a team of professional staff in delivering excellent services to the community we serve.
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Planning, Geography, or a related field. A related Master’s degree is desirable. In addition, candidates should have a minimum of three years of progressively greater management experience, preferably in a municipal or county environment. AICP certification is a plus.
Special Note: The successful candidate must be able to travel to various locations within the City and Borough of Juneau to meet program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid Alaska driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required.
