The San Mateo County Transit District is the administrative body for public transit and transportation programs in San Mateo County, California: SamTrans bus service, Redi-Wheels paratransit service, Caltrain commuter rail service and the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. The District transports approximately 32 million customers a year and is one of the nation’s top transit agencies. The Director, Planning reports to the Chief Officer, Planning, Grants, and Transportation Authority (TA) and is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and administering the transportation planning activities in support of the San Mateo County Transit District (District). The incumbent will direct the strategic development of multi-modal policies, programs, and planning studies; and develop strategies to improve mobility and resolve major transportation issues; he/she will also be responsible for environmental and air quality compliance activities for capital programs and projects; ensure compliance with federal, state, and regional legislation, and regulations pertaining to transportation and land use planning; and represent the District before city councils and other local, regional, state and federal agencies, and boards and commissions in support of the transportation and land use planning.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Transportation Planning, Engineering, Economics, Business/Public Administration or a similar discipline with seven years of experience in transportation/land use planning and/or related activities, plus three years of management or supervisory experience. You should have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. You should also have the ability to assemble information, make reports and present in general public, boards and commissions. Must possess knowledge of principles and practices of transportation and urban land use planning and have experience in managing or directing public transportation planning and congestion management projects and initiatives
