The salary for this position is up to $125,000/DOQ/E. Rapid City also offers an outstanding benefits package.

A unique community of 75,000 residents, Rapid City is the second largest city in South Dakota and is blessed with rich history, stunning natural beauty, and an abundance of national monuments and parks.  That is not the best part --- the town is alive and growing with a vibrant Downtown active with shops, restaurants, and a number of art galleries and brew pubs. Rapid City is also home to Ellsworth Airforce Base, and nearby is Sturgis, home of the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.  The community benefits from its access to major rail, highways, and an outstanding Regional Airport that provides direct access to major hub cities around the country.          

The City seeks to hire a strong leader that can effectively communicate the importance of establishing a long-term vision and plan for the City’s future growth to local officials and other community stakeholders. 

The Director will report to the Mayor and be responsible for overseeing the Current Planning, Long Range Planning, and Building Services Divisions, and lead a team of 24 employees and a $2.1M annual budget.

The position requires 10+ years of municipal planning experience (7 yrs. mgt.) or a combination, along with a Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Public Administration, or a related field.  AICP certification is also required, or the ability to obtain it within a year. A Master’s Degree is desired.
