Assistant Professor (Lecturer) – Songdo, South Korea

Start Date: July 1, 2018

Background: The Department of City & Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah seeks a collaborative, engaging and innovative candidate to anchor the offering of our Bachelor of Science in Urban Ecology at the Utah Asia Campus in Songdo, South Korea. The undergraduate degree in Urban Ecology focuses on exploring the interrelationships among social, environmental and economic systems, with an aim toward enhancing the vitality and sustainability of places and communities.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will teach core Urban Ecology courses and an elective to the broader Utah Asia Campus student body. In addition to teaching, all faculty members are responsible for both scholarly research in their field and service to the University. Experience teaching in an active learning environment and using current technology in courses should be highlighted in the letter of intent. All classes are taught in English. The successful candidate should expect to teach a 3/3/1 schedule over 12 months, making the work load 65% teaching, 25% scholarship (research and/or creative activity) and 10% service.

Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an earned doctorate in planning, urban/regional planning, or a related field (e.g. social ecology, urban studies/design, applied ecology) by December 31, 2017 and/or a Master’s degree in a planning, urban/regional planning, or a related field and an extensive amount of professional practice experience. Proficiency with GIS and/or the Adobe Creative Cloud is required. Course development and curriculum design experience is desirable. Applicants with graphic experience, and knowledge of the ecology of cities is preferred.

Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with experience. All full-time employees are provided a health benefit plan. Housing is provided for UAC employees with an E-1 Korean Visa. Some personal and professional travel expenses are provided by the UAC.

Note: This 12-month non-tenure-track position requires relocation to South Korea. The initial appointment will be from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019 and is renewable upon review.  As a condition of employment, a successful candidate must be able to get a valid work visa for South Korea.

Location:
This position is located at the University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC) in Incheon (Songdo area), South Korea (http://songdoibd.com/) Along with Ghent University, George Mason University, and Stony Brook University (SUNY), the University of Utah is one of the foundation institutions of Incheon Global Campus (IGC). All students spend three years studying at the UAC in South Korea and one year studying in Salt Lake City. All graduating students at UAC receive a University of Utah degree. Currently, the UAC offers four undergraduate majors in communication, psychology, film and media arts, and urban ecology and three graduate programs in public health, global J.D. and biomedical informatics.
