The City of Portland, Maine, has an opening for a Deputy Director in the Planning & Urban Development Department. This is a highly responsible management position in a department engaged in ambitious projects that impact Portland residents, businesses, and visitors. The Deputy Director will help oversee and work closely with staff on new and ongoing projects in the department which encompasses development review, historic preservation, and long range and transportation planning. Specific responsibilities include working with developers and property owners on proposed redevelopment projects; leading ongoing rewriting of the City’s Land Use Code and other policy initiatives; working with neighborhood groups, residents and other stakeholders to ensure robust public engagement in policy and development issues; presenting proposed City plans and policies to the City Council, boards and committees, as well in other public forums; maintaining effective working relationships with Directors and division heads for other City departments; representing the City in various venues; and supporting a balanced approach to growth and development that reflects the vision of Portland’s Comprehensive Plan and City Council policy direction.
Requirements
- Applicants should have a strong record of working with a variety of stakeholders in a complex urban environment.
- Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- The position requires an advanced degree in urban planning, or closely related field, and a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience.

This is a non-union position (Grade D62) -Pay range: $93,421.00 - $105,162.00/year
